Until a Dead Horse Kicks You

The Story of an Ordinary Hero

Alec Griffiths 1900-1995

by Robert Crack

'Never say die until a dead horse kicks you' was the philosophy by which Alec Griffiths of Arncliffe, Sydney lived his long life. Born on New Year's day 1900, Alec Griffiths was a witness to Australia's Journey through the twentieth century - a period that would test his stoic optimism time and time again.

Alec Griffiths was one of Australia's longest-lived World War One veterans.  Born on New Year's Day 1900, Alec was a witness to almost all of the twentieth century, and the incredible changes that it brought. Alec was featured on the 7:30 Report, Hinch, 11AM and Midday with Ray Martin.  Articles about him appeared in almost every metro and regional newspaper, and in the pages of the Australian's weekend magazine.  He was the key subject in the ABC documentary Cenotaph.
